Our Team

Matt Batty

Matt Batty, MSc, P.Geo, is a Geostatistician and the founder of Understood Mineral Resources Ltd., bringing 14 years of experience in the mining industry. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Saskatchewan, a Master of Science in Geostatistics from the Centre for Computational Geostatistics at the University of Alberta and is a registered professional geologist with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan. His expertise spans geological modeling, mineral resource estimation and uncertainty analysis, production reconciliation, grade control, mine planning, and preparation of NI 43-101 reports, as well as other international reporting codes including JORC, S-K 1300, and SAMREC.

Before founding Understood Mineral Resources Ltd., Matt worked at various underground mines with Cameco Corp. (2012–2016) and played a key role in developing NexGen Energy Ltd.’s Arrow Deposit (2016–2022), a tier-one mining asset, taking it from the 2016 maiden resource to the 2021 Feasibility Study Mineral Resource.

Since establishing Understood in 2022, Matt has provided geological and geostatistical services to companies of all sizes across the mining sector. His work includes both conventional techniques, such as ordinary kriging—as applied on Vicuna’s Cu-Au-Ag Filo Del Sol Deposit, the largest greenfield copper discovery in the past 30 years—and advanced probabilistic resource modelling products, including stochastic drill hole spacing studies, such as those conducted for Uranium Energy Corp.’s Roughrider Uranium Deposit.

Matt aims to leverage his operational mining experience, project development expertise, and academic training to support companies in achieving robust, defensible mineral resource estimates and advanced probabilistic simulations.

Maggie Gregorchuk

Maggie Gregorchuk is an intermediate resource geologist with more than a decade of hands-on  experience that spans both exploration programmes and day-to-day underground mine operations.

She has built and audited three-dimensional geological models and executed full geostatistical workflows from data verification through variography, kriging, classification, and reporting using industry-standard tools such as MinePlan, Vulcan, and Leapfrog. Her background combines large, tier-1 mining environments in Thompson, Manitoba with the fast-paced demands of small-scale start-ups in remote settings. Giving her a practical understanding of production reconciliation, grade control, and short-range planning and a appreciation for data integrity. At Understood Mineral Resources she now applies this blend of analytical rigour and operational insight to deliver defensible resource models, database optimisation, and clear technical guidance that help clients transform raw exploration data into robust, auditable mineral resource statements and actionable mine-planning advice adding value from first drillhole through production.

Both Maggie and Matt pride themselves on being people-oriented, prioritizing clear communication and collaborative work efforts with clients.

Connor Grenwich

Connor Grenwich is a Junior Resource Geologist at Understood Mineral Resources Ltd., bringing over 15 years of experience in exploration geology, resource development, and geological modelling. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Geological Sciences from the University of Saskatchewan and completed advanced studies in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at SAIT. Connor is a registered Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).

Connor has developed broad technical expertise across a diverse range of commodities, including uranium, copper, gold, coal, and aggregate. His work in the uranium sector involved exploration and developing 3D models to expand resources. His precious and base metals experience ranges from greenstone-hosted orogenic gold to copper-gold porphyry and skarn systems. Additionally, he has spearheaded coal evaluation programs in the Elk Valley, focusing on project management for drilling activities and large-diameter core logging, as well as aggregate exploration projects across southern Saskatchewan and Alberta utilizing EM31 conductivity surveys and pit logging to assess resource potential.

Before joining Understood, Connor worked as an intermediate hydrogeologist, managing municipal and oil and gas projects and developing site-specific 3D geological and contaminant models for targeting, groundwater flow, mass calculations, and delineation. His technical toolkit includes Leapfrog, Vulcan, Oasis Montaj, ArcGIS, and QGIS.

At Understood Mineral Resources, Connor applies his technical background to assist clients with geological modelling, data integrity, and technical reporting. He shares the team’s commitment to providing defensible data and clear technical guidance, helping clients transform exploration data into actionable mineral resource statements.
